Great idea for a tribe. Coincidentally (great minds think alike apparently), I just watched "The Idle Class" today.
It was made just after "The Kid", I think, in 1921. "The Idle Class" includes a brief "flash-aside" fantasy sequence that shows what the tramp character imagines could happen when he first sees the woman in the story. Wonderful visual technique for this movie. Chaplin has a dual role, playing both the tramp and a wealthy twit, occasionally fighting each other. Great showcase for acting and cinematic ideas.

Mon, December 27, 2004 - 4:32 AMUnfortunately, the print that I saw was a rerelease that was made after talkies came into vogue. Part of Chaplin's resistance to going into talkies was that what gave his comedy the extra punch was that he "undercranked" his films, which effectively sped everything up.
There was a brief fashion to want to slow down old silent films to the same speed as the talkies which involved a technique duplicating certain frames. It was this version of "Idle Class" that I saw which all too often had the Tramp hanging in the air for an instant and for no particular reason.
